FAQ – frequently asked questions
Who can study at Seinäjoki Adult Education Centre?
Anyone can study at Seinäjoki Adult Education Centre, regardless of age, background or place of residence. The activities are open to all and intended as a shared learning space for people of all ages. No prior skills are required to study.
What is the mission of Seinäjoki Adult Education Centre?
The centre offers general education, hobby and qualification courses as well as basic arts education. The aim is to support residents’ independent learning and well-being. The centre operates throughout the city and is open to everyone.
Where can I find the courses?
Courses can be found online at opistopalvelut.fi/seinajoki. The course offering is updated continuously, and you can register for courses throughout the year. You can also see course schedules and any available places.
How do I register for courses?
The easiest way to register for courses is online at opistopalvelut.fi/seinajoki. You can also register by phone at +358 6 416 2440 or by visiting Kansalaiskampus at Kalevankatu 33, Seinäjoki.
Can I practice course registration?
Yes. The centre offers a free practice course where you can safely practice registering. The course does not commit you to anything and can be cancelled freely. The Course Registration Practice can be found on opistopalvelut.fi/seinajoki.
What am I committing to when I register for a course?
When you register, you commit to paying the course fee if the course takes place. The centre needs correct contact details for invoicing and possible course changes. It is important to read the general terms before registering.
Why do I need to register for courses in advance?
Advance registration helps the centre decide whether a course will run. If there are too few participants, the course may be cancelled. If there are more applicants than the course can accept, another similar course may be arranged if possible. Advance registration ensures a fair order and adequate preparation for the teacher.
Why is a personal identity number requested when registering?
A personal identity number is needed to identify the student and correctly associate information in the course management system. It also ensures correct invoicing and recording of study achievements. Data is processed in accordance with legal requirements.
Is it safe to provide my personal identity number in the registration system?
Yes. The course management system is secure and protected by passwords. The city’s IT networks are continuously monitored by experts. Data is processed in accordance with the Personal Data Act and data protection principles.
Why is a mobile phone number requested when registering?
A phone number is needed so the centre can quickly notify you of any changes. It enables contact regarding, for example, changes in lesson times. This ensures smooth communication.
Can I register for a course that has already started?
Yes, you can register for a course that has already started if there is still space in the group. Each course is different, so we recommend checking the situation with customer service. If you register for a year-long course only in the spring, you will be charged 50% of the course fee for the spring term (does not apply to special courses that have a separate weekend price).
Is it worth registering if the course appears to be full?
Absolutely. Course availability changes constantly and freed-up places are offered to those on the waiting list in order of registration. If there are many people on the waiting list, the centre may arrange additional courses.
Will I receive a separate invitation for the course I’ve registered for?
For most courses, we do not send a separate invitation. If the course start time changes or the course is cancelled, you will receive a text message. Those on the waiting list will be contacted personally if a place becomes available. For some short courses we may send a reminder message if there is additional information about the course or required materials.
How can I cancel my course registration?
You can cancel your registration via customer service, by phone, or online if you registered online.
Cancellation is free if made at least eight days before the course starts. If you cancel later or fail to cancel, the course fee will be charged partly or in full (if the student cancels 1–7 days before the start of the course, half of the course fee will be charged (at least €10); if the student does not cancel, does not attend the course or discontinues their studies, the full course fee will be charged).
Cancelling a registration for personal reasons (e.g. illness, work conflict or moving away) does not entitle the student to a refund or cancellation of the course fee. Please note that notifying the teacher or failing to pay is not considered a cancellation.
How do I pay for my course?
The course fee is invoiced after the course has started if the registration is valid and no cancellation has been made in accordance with the terms. You can use gift cards, employee benefits and other vouchers if you submit them to customer service before the course starts. Course benefits are personal. For more information about benefits, contact customer service or see the website.
Payment cannot be made at the time of registration, except for E-passi. The Adult Education Centre cannot accept cash payments.
If payment is not made, it will be transferred to the collection agency Lowell. The course price takes into account that a cancelled single session will not be replaced by an extra session.
Will my course fee be refunded if I withdraw from the course?
Registration is binding, so the course fee will not be refunded even if the student has to withdraw for personal reasons. If the course is cancelled by the Adult Education Centre, refunds can be requested from the centre’s customer service.
What is included in the course price?
The course price reflects the actual costs of organising the course, such as course length, teacher’s pay and facility rents. Materials and other practical expenses are also included (additional fees are listed in the course details). Prices are kept reasonable to make participation as easy as possible.
Why haven’t I received an SMS notification about a cancelled session?
Text messages are sent to the phone number the student provided in the system. If the number is incorrect, has changed or contains an error, the message will not reach the recipient. Therefore it is important to keep your contact details up to date. Occasionally the issue may also be due to the operator’s system.
Why haven’t I received a confirmation email for my registration?
An automatic confirmation is sent to the email address you provided. If the address is incorrect or has changed, the message will not be delivered. Check your spam folder, especially if you use Gmail. You can ask customer service to check your details if necessary.
Can I get a course certificate?
Yes. A certificate can be requested from the centre’s customer service and it is subject to a fee. A certificate can be useful, for example, when applying for jobs or documenting your skills.
How can I give feedback or suggest course ideas?
You can easily give feedback to the centre’s customer service or staff. The centre collects feedback regularly and uses it to improve quality. After each course, students automatically receive a feedback survey by email.
Course suggestions can be made via the online form or to our staff, whose contact details can be found on our website.
Where can I find information about the centre’s activities and events?
Up-to-date course information is available at opistopalvelut.fi/seinajoki. The centre’s website provides general information about the Adult Education Centre, courses, services and facilities as well as self-assessment reports, statistics and strategy. Event information can be found on our events page.
How are liability issues handled in the centre’s activities?
We recommend checking the validity and terms of your leisure-time insurance. Residents of the city of Seinäjoki are covered by the city’s insurance for activities organised by the centre, but non-residents are not covered.
Students must follow teachers’ instructions and the safer space principles. If a student disrupts teaching or behaves inappropriately towards the teacher, other students or the facilities, they may be given a warning and, if the behaviour does not change, removed from the course. Leaving personal equipment, supplies and materials in the teaching premises is at each student’s own risk.
If you have any questions, contact the centre’s customer service!
