This summer, I had the chance to combine professional development with unforgettable family memories during my catering internship at Kitchen Alvariina in Seinäjoki. As a dietitian student from Thomas More Geel (Belgium), I participated in a collaborative placement with SeAMK, where I gained hands-on experience in a real-world food service environment.
At Kitchen Alvariina, I worked alongside a dedicated team preparing meals for schools and daycares. Instead of restaurant-style service, chauffeurs delivered the meals daily to our young customers. I communicated in English, and despite the language differences, the kitchen staff made me feel welcome and supported. I gained practical insight into planning and preparing meals that are both nutritious and suitable for young children. I became more confident in managing dietary restrictions, understanding portion control, and ensuring that every meal met consistent quality standards—experiences that have strengthened my foundation as a future dietitian.
But this internship wasn’t just about work—it was also a chance for my husband, our two children, and me to explore the beauty of Finland together. Although the City Hall kindly offered me a bicycle, we chose to explore the area on foot and by car. Seinäjoki surprised us with its peaceful charm and family-friendly atmosphere. The children’s playgrounds were absolutely fantastic, and our kids were thrilled to discover new ones almost every day.
We spent weekends venturing beyond Seinäjoki. In Vaasa, we enjoyed the coastal scenery and relaxed family time. One highlight was celebrating our daughter’s birthday at PowerPark, a thrilling amusement park that lit up her special day. We also visited Tampere, where the quirky Spy Museum gave us a fun and unexpected peek into the world of espionage. Nestled beside Seinäjoki’s iconic civic center, the library offered a calm and beautifully designed space to pause and reflect before our journey home. On our way home, we made a final stop in Rovaniemi, crossing the Arctic Circle and visiting Santa Claus Village—a magical experience for all of us, especially the kids.
This internship gave me more than professional skills—it gave me a deeper understanding of how nutrition works in practice, and a chance to bond with my family in a new and beautiful country. I return home with new knowledge, cherished memories, and a heart full of gratitude.
