Urban models provide a three-dimensional representation of the built environment. The model can be presented using photographs with textures or colors according to the theme associated with the model.

The city of Seinäjoki has been using three-dimensional city models to support its planning activities since 2005. Methods for publishing and utilizing the city model among residents are currently being implemented.

The 3D city model can be found here.

Seinäjoki’s virtual city model and 3D interactive platform

Vad är en virtuell stadsmodell?

The city model aims to be a digital version of the city. With the help of a virtual city model, plans can be presented, compared, and studied in a very realistic environment. The city model can be used on almost all digital platforms. For municipal use, the easiest way is to use the city model with an internet browser on either a computer or a mobile device. For planning purposes, the city model is downloaded from files or databases for use in planning applications.

The city model works best when it corresponds as closely as possible to the existing environment (built or unbuilt). If a digital city model can be implemented and maintained in a way that resembles the existing environment, then the virtual city model can be called a “digital twin” of the natural environment. This “digital twin” can be used to present several solution options to residents and decision-makers in a high-quality, fast, and cost-effective manner.

Even for municipal decision-makers, a plan presented in a real environment always provides better conditions for achieving optimal results than plans that are detached from their environment.

What is an interaction platform?

The 3D interactive platform enables dialogue between planners, decision-makers, and residents. Presenting plans in three dimensions makes it easier for residents to understand the actual environmental impact of the plans. Residents can use the interactive platform to provide feedback on different projects. If necessary, they can also present their own plans, either verbally or in writing.
