Pre-primary education begins one year before the start of compulsory education and the start of school. All six-year-old children are required to participate in pre-primary education.

In pre-primary education, children are prepared for school. The goal is to support the child’s development and learning abilities, as well as strengthen social skills and self-esteem. Pre-primary education aims to provide positive learning experiences and promote children’s language development and readiness to learn new things. Activities are largely based on play, shared exploration, and imagination, taking into account the child’s level of development. Possible developmental or learning challenges can also be identified during this stage.

Guardians must apply for a pre-primary place at the beginning of the year when the child is due to start. A typical pre-primary day lasts about four hours. If parents are working, the child usually spends the rest of the day in regular daycare. Pre-primary education is free of charge for all children, and a free warm meal is provided during the day. All learning materials are also free. If the child attends daycare in addition to pre-primary education during the day, parents pay a reduced daycare fee for that time.
