Development of the station area

The first phase of the Seinäjoki station area opened in December 2024. The station is a public transport hub as well as a workplace and home for hundreds of people. It is only a couple hundred metres from the station building to Keskustori (the Central Square).

The construction of the blocks on the town centre side of the station area is divided into four phases. The first construction phase includes the wellbeing area’s family centre, a residential apartment building, an office and commercial building containing the station hall, the station square and an underpass, and a five-storey parking garage (P-Asema). Two more residential apartment buildings will be built later.

Over the coming years the station area will be developed across approximately 18 hectares.

Bringing density and livability to the city centre

While developers raise the city to a more urban landscape and provide homes for new residents, the City of Seinäjoki is enhancing the centre’s livability. A pavilion has been completed at Keskustori to serve various events. A completely unique space-themed playground has been built for children. Lakeudenpuisto is being transformed into an event park, which includes, among other things, a skate park. A stage area for performances is also planned. The park connects to the station via a walking route (Elissanpolku) through the new apartment block.

As a commercial area the centre is becoming denser. Restaurants, cafés, shops and services are all within a few hundred metres. Traffic planning ensures that moving around the centre is easy and safe by all modes of transport and also supports the development of commerce.

The Airport Is Evolving into a center of expertise

The City of Seinäjoki is developing the Seinäjoki Airport area in cooperation with the Municipality of Ilmajoki. Branded as West Avia, the area is being transformed into a next-generation hub for business, logistics, and aviation, where solutions are tested and developed to drive the entire industry forward.

Seinäjoki Airport already serves as an active testing platform for companies seeking an environment for piloting new technologies. More than €27 million has been invested in infrastructure in the area—facilities are ready, and up to 60 hectares of land is available for new operators. Finland’s national drone strategy highlights test areas and environments as a key factor in the development of unmanned aviation. West Avia is ready to meet this need.

Business aviation tailored to corporate needs

The airport also supports the business aviation needs of regional companies. Located just a 10-minute drive from the center of Seinäjoki, the airport already handles hundreds of charter and business flights annually. These services are particularly utilized by large regional companies for transporting customers and spare parts.

Ongoing infrastructure development and expanding services create even stronger conditions for the growth of business aviation and for attracting new operators to the area. In the future, West Avia can offer companies tailored business aviation solutions that improve accessibility, save time, and support international growth. https://westavia.fi/en/home/
