In Seinäjoki, birthdays have for years been celebrated with a slightly bigger heart — and volume. Emppu’s birthdays are not just one person’s milestone, but an open live-music celebration where local culture, friends and a love of music meet. This year the celebrations were held in January over two evenings at Helena’s Bier Bar and BAR15. The first night featured four rap acts, while on the second night four bands took the stage in the spirit of heavier metal and punk.

Who is Emppu from Seinäjoki?

The person behind the celebrations is Emppu Wahlroos, who describes themself as a “Seinäjoki local or a Seinäjoki handyman.” Birthdays have been organized for about ten years now, excluding the corona years. Over the years the events have grown into a tradition that many already look forward to.

The idea came from friends and music

The idea for the parties came from a simple reason: parties are fun. However, the circle of friends was so large that hosting house parties didn’t feel fair to the neighbors. The solution was found in a familiar restaurant, and at the same time the opportunity opened up to make birthdays something bigger and more open.
-And that’s how it started. I started organizing birthdays in restaurants, Emppu says.

Courage grows by doing

According to Emppu, the courage to carry out the idea came from opportunities and a love for live music. When you believe in your own work and ask boldly, doors can open in surprising ways. He wants to pass the same message to others: trust yourself and ask — you have nothing to lose.

Thanks to the community ❤️

Over the years the birthday celebrations have been realized with support from many parties. Special thanks go to Lakeus Punk Ry, BAR15, Heikää ry, the performers, the participants — and above all to Seinäjoki, which has made the events and the audience possible. Emppu’s birthday parties are a reminder that the best parties are created together.
