In Veneskoski-Viitala village, people chat in the sauna – ‘There is strength in working together’

Anu Yli-Renko and Minna Asiala describe the village community’s spirit as warm and communal. The villagers have become friends they meet outside of village association events as well.
— When I introduced the villagers I met at Vauhtiajoilla, my aunt asked whether I have any friends other than those from Viitala, Anu laughs.
Anu and Minna are actively involved in organizing the village association’s events.
— It’s a pleasure to see old and new villagers who participate enthusiastically. Our village has always been known for its active, volunteer and communal spirit.
In autumn we get to dance and celebrate at the Syysrieha.
There are plenty of events of all kinds: the popular Mykänristi Moonlight Ski starts the year and the Easter bonfire, an old tradition, brings hundreds of people together. In autumn there is dancing and celebration at the Syysrieha, where, among others, the village’s own band has performed.
The village has its own gym and a frisbee golf course. The ice hockey rink serves skaters and, in summer, pesäpallo (Finnish baseball) players. In the school building shared with Keski-Nurmo there is, among other things, an elementary school and a combined library.
As strengths of their village, Minna and Anu mention the river, the proximity of Lake Hirvijärvi, opportunities for outdoor activities and hobbies, and the presence of businesses and entrepreneurship.
— From your own doorstep you can go straight into the forest to enjoy nature, Anu says.
The area also attracts new residents.
— Here the plots are larger and building land is cheaper than in the center. There’s a direct route, so you can get to Seinäjoki faster from here than from some remote housing areas, Minna describes.

Anu’s and Minna’s tips for the Veneskoski-Viitala village:
- Ice swimming and sauna bathing at the Veneskoski quarry.
- Good trails lead to the Mykänristi lean-to, e.g. from Venestalo. It is a popular destination in summer too.
- Come and visit the village hall!
