Mediation of criminal offences or disputes
Criminal and civil case mediation is a free service in which voluntary mediators act as intermediaries between the parties of the criminal offence or civil case and assist the parties in their negotiations.
The aim of the service is to address the mental and material harm to the victim and help the parties reach an agreement on how these may be compensated. Mediation can be provided as a parallel or complementary service to the criminal proceedings.
The police, the prosecuting authority, some other authority or the interested party can initiate the mediation process.
In cases involving minors, their guardians must also consent to the mediation.
Matters suitable for mediation include damage to property, assault, vandalism, breach of domiciliary peace, defamation, theft and minor disputes.
