Parking fees
There are some 560 parking spaces subject to charge in the city centre.
They are mainly on the following streets: Valtionkatu, Ruukintie, Puskantie, Keskuskatu, Kauppakatu and Torikatu. Times when parking fees apply are shown on an additional traffic sign, usually from Monday to Friday from 9.00 to 18.00, and Saturdays from 9.00 to 15.00.
The parking fees are: 20 cents/ 12 min, 1 euro/ 1 h, and the following hours 1,80 euro each, so that 2 h costs 2,80 euros, etc. This concerns both cars and motor bikes.
You can pay the parking fee by using a ticket machine (lippuautomaatti) or a parking meter. When using a machine, you receive a ticket showing the time reserved for parking. You must place the ticket in the windscreen so that it is clearly seen from outside.
Ways of payment:
- coins: -ticket machines: 10, 20 and 50 cents, 1 and 2 euros
- parking meters: 20 cents, 1 euro
- credit card:Visa, Diners club, American Express, Master Card
Limited parking and parking disc
In the city centre, some parking spaces have a limited parking time, either 30 minutes or 60 minutes. It is indicated by an additional traffic sign displaying the parking disc.
When parking on such parking spaces, you need a parking disc (pysäköintikiekko) available at service & petrol stations and largest super markets. You turn the disc so that the time of arrival (saapumisaika) is the next hour or half hour, depending on which is earlier. This shows when parking time starts. The parking disc is then placed in the windscreen, clearly visible from the outside the car. The time of arrival mustn’t be changed during the parking time shown on the disc.
A parking disc does not have to be used on motor bikes. The limited parking time must still be considered.
Parking fine
You may be fined (i.e. given a penalty fee) if you do not pay the parking fee, you do not use the parking disc where required, the car is run on idle unnecessarily, or the car is parked contrary to other traffic regulations. A parking fine is given to the driver of the vehicle or attached on the windscreen or other visible place by a traffic warden. The penalty fee can be paid directly to a cash desk of the city (see address below), or to a bank using the enclosed deposit form. You must make the payment within two weeks of the date, otherwise the payment will be multiplied by one and a half. If you feel you have been wrongly treated, you can make a written appeal to the traffic warden, addressed to the Parking control office in City hall.
