Disability Sports
Sports provided for special groups are aimed at people with a disability, disease or another decrease in functional ability, for whom it is difficult to participate in ordinary sports groups. The sports activities are applied to the needs of the sports amateur and the group. The primary goal is to improve your functional ability and physical condition as well as to make you feel good.
The instructed groups arranged by the Sports Department are leisure-time sports groups, whose activities are not considered rehabilitation. In the special sports groups, everyone participates in the activities on the basis of their own functional ability. In case a person participating in a sport group needs an assistant, they must bring along their own assistant.
The Sports Department arranges sports for the disabled and the chronically ill as part of its own activities as well as in cooperation with disabled people’s organizations and public health organizations.
In addition to instructed sports groups, the activities pursued include:
• providing information about disability sports
• expert assistance in disability sports
• economic support to organizations and associations arranging disability sports
• upkeep and building of sports sites paying attention to the needs of special groups
• disability sports events
• the development of disability sports in cooperation between different actors
• training (e.g. for peer instructors)
