Instruction delivered partly in English
Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) programme in English was started in autumn 2008.
One new class of pupils is admitted to the programme every year. In primary education, the instruction is provided in Marttila School and in secondary education in Seinäjoki Lyceum. The pupils are admitted to the programme based on an aptitude test in which pupils' command of their mother tongue is a conclusive factor.
The content and goals of the instruction are the same as in the national curriculum.
The main objective of the instruction is to learn English in a natural way while learning different subjects. The language used in learning to read and write is Finnish.

A group in which the instruction is delivered partly in English
The aim is to start, in autumn 2009, a class at Seinäjoki Lyceum in which part of the instruction will be delivered in English. In the subjects studied partly in English, Finnish and English study material is used side by side. The language of instruction is partly English, and the support language of instruction is Finnish. The instruction does not follow the CLIL approach; the aim is to introduce it later on.
The objective of the instruction is that the pupils gain a solid knowledge of English (level A 1). When finishing the comprehensive school, the pupils should have such a level in spoken and written English that they are able to complete courses taught in English in the secondary school.
