The Regional Museum of South Ostrobothnia
The Regional Museum of South Ostrobothnia is composed of a multiform and wide museum ensemble, the centre of which is the scenic Törnävä Museum Area, some three kilometres from the city centre of Seinäjoki. The Museum Area is surrounded by the well-kept park of the old Östermyra foundry, bordered by the Seinäjoki River. The area is a popular place for events and recreation.
The Regional Museum of South Ostrobothnia is the cultural-historical central museum for Finnish-speaking South Ostrobothnia and Seinäjoki City Museum. The aim of the museum is, according to the Museum Act, to maintain and strengthen the people’s understanding of their culture, history and environment. The mission of the Regional Museum of South Ostrobothnia is to implement the collection and registration of the cultural heritage, associated with museum activity, as well as to arrange and take care of the object, photo and archive collections in its possession.
The museum carries out exhibition and museum pedagogical activity as well as research and publication activity. Moreover, the responsibility of the museum is to promote the museum activities in its operational area and to provide expert aid in issues related to its field of activity, as well as to promote the conservation of built cultural environment in its operational area.
Of the units belonging to the Regional Museum of South Ostrobothnia, Lotta Svärd Museum and the Civil Guard Museum is located right in the city centre. The Drying Barn Museum and the Finnish Emigrant Museum are about 20 km from the centre, in Peräseinäjoki.
